Get Cited, Not Just Ranked: Gemini SEO for Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode
Gemini answers a buyer's question with a written reply and a short row of sources, not ten blue links. Because the Gemini app, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all ground themselves in Google Search and all break one question into many smaller searches, one programme can cover all three. Our Gemini SEO service makes your pages reachable by the right crawler, complete enough to survive that fan-out, confirmed as a real entity, and tracked month by month.
We run it from Noida for clients in India and the United States, on top of the classic Google SEO your site already relies on. Rankings stay the foundation. Citations are what we add.

We run a fixed set of buyer prompts through the Gemini app, AI Overviews and AI Mode, record which sources each surface cites, and send you the baseline with the first three fixes.
The gap
Why a Google ranking alone does not get you cited by Gemini
Gemini reads Google's index, so it is tempting to assume a strong ranking carries over. In the sites we audit it rarely does, and a standard SEO report will not show you why.
You rank for the head term, not the fan-out
Gemini turns one question into several narrower searches: the category, the location, the price band, the comparison. Your page may win the broad query while each sub-search lands on a competitor who wrote the narrower page, and the citation follows the sub-search.
Google-Extended is blocked by a bulk bot rule
Google-Extended is a separate robots.txt token from Googlebot. Security plugins and copied disallow lists often block it in a group with other AI crawlers. Your rankings are untouched, and the grounding step is told to leave your content alone.
Thin or unstructured pages are skipped, even when they rank
Grounding pulls a page, then looks for a passage that answers the sub-query on its own. A page built from short marketing lines, or one long unbroken block, gives the model nothing clean to lift, so it takes the passage from the next result.
The entity is not confirmed
Before Gemini trusts a source it looks for agreement between your site, the profiles that describe you, and the Knowledge Graph. Inconsistent names, addresses, founders or descriptions across those places read as uncertainty, and uncertain sources are quoted less.
No earned media or list inclusion
Many buyer prompts are recommendation prompts, and for those Gemini leans on editorial round-ups, category lists and industry directories rather than on the vendors themselves. If nobody independent has listed you, there is no path into that answer.
Nothing tracks citations across the three surfaces
AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini app can cite different sources for the same question. Without a prompt set run on each surface every month, you have no baseline and no way to know which of the three you just lost.
How it works
How Gemini decides what to cite
As of 2026, the Gemini app, AI Overviews and AI Mode all work the same way at the core: a language model asks Google Search for evidence, reads what comes back, and writes an answer with sources attached. It looks you up at the moment of the question. Four behaviours decide whether you end up in the reply.
Everything in the service below maps back to one of these four. It is the same discipline as our generative engine optimization work, and it overlaps with answer engine optimization, since AI Overviews grew out of featured-snippet logic. The difference is the fan-out, which changes how a site has to be built.
It grounds in Google Search
The model does not answer from memory when it can check. It runs searches, reads the results, and anchors its claims to pages it found. If a page is not indexed, or Google-Extended is blocked, it never enters that pool.
It fans the question out
One prompt becomes many sub-searches, each covering one facet of the question. The answer is assembled from the best passage for each facet, which is why a site needs coverage across the cluster rather than one strong page.
It confirms the entity before it trusts the source
The model weighs who is speaking. A brand whose details agree across its own site, third-party profiles and the Knowledge Graph is treated as a known entity; one that does not line up is treated as noise.
It writes the answer, then attaches sources
The reply is a synthesis in the model's own words with citations placed beside the claims they support. Being cited means your passage carried a claim the model chose to make, not that your page was listed.
Move any one of these and citation rates shift. Move all four together and the shift is large, which is why the workstreams below run in the order they do.
What we do
End-to-end Gemini SEO
Six workstreams, run in order. The first two clear the reasons Gemini cannot use your site; the next three give it reasons to; the last one proves it happened.
Technical & crawler access audit
We check that Googlebot and Google-Extended can both reach every priority page, review robots.txt, CDN and security rules for bulk bot blocks, compare the rendered page with the raw HTML, benchmark Core Web Vitals, and list the schema gaps by page.
Fan-out content architecture
We map the sub-queries behind your buyers' prompts, decide which page should answer each one, rewrite headings so the direct answer sits in the first lines beneath them, and build out the cluster so no facet of the question is left to a competitor.
Schema & structured data
Organization, Article, FAQPage, HowTo and Speakable markup, written to match the copy and validated after every content change, so the entity on the page is unambiguous and the passages are cleaner to extract and attribute.
E-E-A-T & entity authority
Author pages with real credentials, consistent brand facts across your site and third-party profiles, and alignment with the Knowledge Graph entry for your organisation, so the model can confirm who you are before it quotes you.
Earned media & list inclusion
Publisher outreach for genuine coverage, placement in the best-of round-ups and category lists that recommendation prompts draw on, and accurate listings in the industry directories your buyers already trust.
Three-surface citation monitoring
A fixed prompt set run monthly across AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini app, combined with Search Console's AI-related reporting, so you see which prompts cite you, which page carried the citation, and how competitors compare on the same set.
The process
Our Gemini SEO process
A fixed order, because a blocked crawler makes content work pointless and thin content makes authority work pointless. Timelines assume a site of up to a few hundred pages; larger sites run the same phases in parallel streams. If you want the classic and AI work under one plan, see our AI SEO services overview.
Weeks 1–2: Baseline citation audit
We agree the prompt set with you, run it on all three surfaces, record who is cited today, and audit crawler access, rendering, speed and schema across the priority pages.
Weeks 3–4: Technical fixes
Unblock Google-Extended, close indexing and rendering gaps, resolve the Core Web Vitals issues that matter, and ship the first round of structured data.
Weeks 5–6: Content restructuring & fan-out mapping
Rewrite the priority pages so each heading answers its sub-query directly, split pages along the fan-out map, and publish the first cluster pages that were missing.
Weeks 7–10: Entity & earned media
Publish author pages, align brand facts across the site and third-party profiles, and begin publisher outreach and list-inclusion work in your category.
Ongoing: Monitor, report, iterate
Re-run the prompt set monthly on each surface, report citation share against competitors, and feed the gaps back into the content and authority queues.
Ask Gemini for the best option in your market and it will write a confident answer that names a few brands, with sources beside them. The same question in AI Mode or under an AI Overview produces a similar list, and the buyer may never scroll past it. Whoever made themselves easiest to ground, fan out to and confirm is shaping that first impression today.
The work to change it is concrete: an open door for Google-Extended, pages that answer each sub-query, an entity Google can confirm, independent lists that include you, and a monthly record across all three surfaces. Start with the free audit and you will have your baseline within a week. If your buyers lean on other assistants too, our Perplexity SEO service runs alongside this one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to the questions we get asked before a Gemini SEO engagement starts.
Ask us something elseIs ranking on Google the same as being cited by Gemini?
No. Ranking puts your page in the pool Gemini draws from; it does not decide what the model quotes. Gemini fans the question out into narrower searches, pulls candidate pages for each, and lifts the most direct passage from a source it can confirm. A page that ranks for the broad query can lose every sub-search, be blocked from grounding, or have no clean passage to lift.
What is Google-Extended and why does it matter?
Google-Extended is a robots.txt user-agent token that controls whether Google may use your content for its AI models and grounding, separately from ordinary crawling by Googlebot. Blocking it does not affect rankings, which is why the block goes unnoticed: a bulk rule that disallows a list of AI crawlers often includes it. We check the token on every audit and open it for the pages you want cited.
Does an llms.txt file help with Gemini?
As of 2026 it is not a documented citation signal for Gemini, AI Overviews or AI Mode, and we do not treat it as one. We still recommend publishing it because it is cheap and gives agents and other AI tools a clean map of your key pages. It is agent readiness, not a citation lever.
What is the difference between AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini app?
AI Overviews is the summary that appears at the top of a normal Google results page for some queries; the classic results sit underneath it. AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search that replaces the results page with a conversational answer and follow-up questions. The Gemini app is a standalone assistant that can use Google Search to ground its replies but is not a results page at all. All three share the grounding and fan-out approach, which is why one programme covers them, but they can cite different sources for the same question, so we track each one separately.
Is there a publisher or revenue programme for Gemini like the one Perplexity runs?
Not as of 2026. Google has no equivalent scheme that pays or formally partners with sites for being cited in Gemini, AI Overviews or AI Mode. The value of a citation is the visibility itself and the branded search and direct visits that follow it, which is what our monthly reporting measures.
How long before we see citations change?
It depends on how quickly Google recrawls your pages and where the gaps were. Access and schema fixes are usually reflected within a few weeks of a recrawl. Content restructuring tends to show in the second and third month. Entity and earned-media signals are the slowest and keep compounding after the first quarter. We report against your baseline monthly so you see the direction rather than wait for a verdict.
